Two Manitoba First Nations have been Granted More Freedoms

Long Plains and Buffalo Point First Nations will begin the process of opting out of the Indian Act and will assume greater control over their reserve land and resources. Ottawa first announced that 18 First Nations are involved in The First Nation Land Management Agreement when they brought in the 2011 budget. Ottawa committed 20 million dollars to the initiative to help First Nations expand economic development and to build private sector relationships. There are now over 50 First Nations operating under their own land codes.
