Criticism Towards Province''s Ban on Coal
Farmers at the Keystone Agricultural Producer''s Annual meeting are against the NDP''s new legislation to ban the use of coal for space and water heating. A resolution to convince the provincial government to delay the ban until alternatives for coal are more practical and readily available. Many Rural communities do not have natural gas services and many coal users have come forward saying they just recently invested in coal-burning space heaters. The province has also just started enforcing a coal tax that is estimated to generate 1.6 million dollars in the next year. It is unknown exactly how many farmers are using coal to heat their property, though the farm group states that the number is substantial.
