PM Harper Says Changes on The Way
During a speech today in Davos, Switzerland Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that there will be major transformations to the country in the coming months. The areas he brought up in the speech were the retirement pension system, immigration, technology investment and more funding to the energy sector. The Conservative Government is reportedly proposing legislation that would gradually increase the age of eligibility for Old Age Security to 67 from where it currently sits at 65. The Old Age Security system currently hands out around 40 billion dollars a year, but that number is set to skyrocket as the number of seniors is set to double in the next 15 years. The Conservative Government is expected to release a budget in the coming months that will set the stage to help lower the federal deficit.
