Federal Crime Bill Main Focus as Justice Meetings Conclude
Federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson says amendments to the Criminal Code will be examined in hopes it will hinder more serious crimes from taking place. The proposed changing of the code comes after three days of deliberation by federal and provincial justice representatives in Ottawa. The adjustments to the Criminal Code will see longer sentences and stiffer penalties for those who participate in home invasions or knife crimes. It is not yet known how much the changes to the code will cost each province but it is estimated the number will be substantial. Ontario alone is estimating that the changes will cost more than one billion dollars, with more expenses to come as new facilities will be needed to hold more convicted prisoners.
