Flood Evacuees Wary of Temporary Housing

Flood evacuees are hesitant towards the offer the Manitoba Government has made for temporary housing relief. Housing the 2 thousand flood victims has cost the federal taxpayer 30 million dollars so far. Out of the 2 thousand flood evacuees, 800 hail from Lake St. Martin. The government promised 150 temporary houses to the people of Lake St. Martin but reports are saying that only 40 have been ordered. Aboriginal Affairs Minister Eric Robinson says that the 40 homes are just the start and that the province will be opening a show home in attempts to persuade people to move back. Lake St. Martin Chief Adrian Sinclair says that rebuilding the community on the same land cannot be justified rationally, and that a new location must be found. For now the province is making changes so people will be able to live at a former radar base in Gypsumville, which will thereafter be used as a natural disaster evacuation centre.
