Manitoba Hydro Will Not Review Controversial Project

An independent review of Hydro''s plans for two mega-dams will not include a review of their most controversial project. Bipole 3 is a high voltage transmission line that will stretch from South of Winnipeg all the way North of Gillam. The line made the news because it was originally supposed to run on the east side of Lake Winnipeg but after changes to the plans it will run on the west side which will almost double the cost and length of the project. A major factor of the change was the protection of a proposed World Heritage Site that straddles the Manitoba-Ontario border. The line will run fourteen hundred kilometres and cost more than 3 billion dollars.
