Federal Government Pushing Proposed Pipeline
An official policy paper on a proposed pipeline stated Thursday that Canada''s independent energy regulator is actually a government ally. Critics of the Conservative government have been saying the government is pressuring the National Energy Board to approve a pipeline that would run from the tar sands in Alberta to the Pacific Ocean for easier exporting to Asia. The National Energy Board started delegations on the 5.5 billion dollar Northern Gateway pipeline this month. Those opposed to the pipeline include Environmental groups and some bands of Native Indians who fear the consequences of an oil spill. The Canadian oil sands are the third largest crude oil deposit in the world.
